Comparative evaluation of the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of Cystoseira barbata, Ulva lactuca, and Corallina officinalis collected from the Sinop coast (Black Sea, Türkiye)

Abstract

This study comparatively evaluated the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of ethanol extracts obtained from the marine macroalgae Cystoseira barbata, Ulva lactuca, and Corallina officinalis collected from the Sinop coast of the Black Sea (Türkiye). Antimicrobial activity was determined using the disk diffusion method against selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as yeast and filamentous fungal strains. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH radical scavenging assay, and IC₅₀ values were calculated. The results demonstrated significant species-dependent differences in biological activity. Corallina officinalis exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Brevibacillus brevis, Listeria monocytogenes, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Salmonella typhimurium, whereas Ulva lactuca showed the greatest inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Candida glabrata, and Candida tropicalis. Although Cystoseira barbata displayed moderate antimicrobial activity, it exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity, reaching 60.26% DPPH radical scavenging activity at 1000 µg/mL with the lowest IC₅₀ value (577.8 µg/mL). In contrast, Corallina officinalis failed to achieve 50% radical scavenging activity within the tested concentration range (IC₅₀ >1000 µg/mL). These findings indicate that Black Sea macroalgae represent valuable natural sources of bioactive compounds with promising applications in the pharmaceutical, food, nutraceutical, and biotechnology industries. However, further phytochemical characterization, isolation of active compounds, mechanistic studies, and in vivo investigations are required before their therapeutic and industrial applications can be fully established.
