THE EFFECTS OF UV-C LIGHT AND OTHER PROTECTED TREATMENTS ON QUALITY AND RESISTANCE CAPACITY OF SATSUMA MANDARINS

Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the effects of UV-C light application and some other protected treatments on postharvest losses and storage capability of ‘Satsuma’ mandarins (C. Unshiu Mar.) in 2001-2003. In the first year of research, different UV-C light durations (0, 10, 15, 20, 25 min) applied and the optimum duration was determined as 10 min. In the second year, the treatments were 10 min of UV-C light alone; calcium and hot water were applications alone and in combination. In both years, fruits were stored at 5±1oC and 90-95 % RH for 60 days. In the fist year experiment, more than 10 min of UV-C light application reduced the lightness of the fruit peel and with increasing duration intensified the effect. The calcium content of the peels of hot water + calciumclorür treated fruit was increased slightly. In general, all treatments, except the ones in combination with calcium, were found to be effective to control diseases. The hot water treatment of 53oC for 3 min was found to be the most favorable, because besides being good in disease control, it also affected many of the quality parameters positively. Hot water treatment did not have unfavorable effects on fruit quality as UV-C light treatments did.

HASAT SONRASI UV-C IŞIĞI VE DİĞER BAZI KORUYUCU UYGULAMALARIN SATSUMA MANDARİNİN KALİTE VE DAYANIM GÜCÜNE ETKİLERİ

Abstract

Bu çalışma, UV-C ışığı ve diğer bazı koruyucu uygulamaların ‘Satsuma’ mandarininde (Citrus Unshiu Mar.) hasat sonrası görülen kayıplara ve depolanabilirliğe etkilerini araştırmak amacıyla 2001-2003 yıllarında yürütülmüştür. Çalışmanın 1. yılında farklı sürelerde (0, 10, 15, 20, 25 dak) UV-C ışık uygulamaları yapılmış ve en uygun sürenin 10 dak olduğu saptanmıştır. Denemenin 2. yılında ise 10 dak UV-C ışığı uygulaması tek başına, kalsiyum ve sıcak su uygulamaları ise tek veya birlikte uygulanmıştır. Her iki yılda da uygulama yapılan ‘Satsuma’ meyveleri 5±1oC’de %90-95 oransal nemde 2 ay süre ile depolanmıştır. İlk yıl çalışmasında, 10 dak üzerindeki UV-C ışığı uygulama sürelerinin kabuk rengini matlaştırdığı ve süre uzadıkça bu etkinin daha da belirgin olduğu gözlenmiştir. Sıcak su + kalsiyum klorür (CaCl2) uygulanan meyve kabuklarında kalsiyum miktarının biraz yükseldiği saptanmıştır. Genel olarak kalsiyumun yer aldığı uygulamalar dışındaki tüm uygulamalar etkin bir hastalık kontrolü sağlamıştır. 53oC 3 dak sıcak su uygulaması hastalık kontrolünün iyi olması yanında, UV-C ışığı uygulaması gibi olumsuzluklar göstermemesi ve birçok kalite parametresini olumlu yönde etkilemesinden dolayı en uygun uygulama bulunmuştur.
